Avon RFC 2nd XV 0 Frampton RFC 2nd XV 14 Frampton's second string travelled to Bathampton to play Avon looking for a return to form after a disappointing defeat to Bishopston the previous week. Captain Jerry Tiley won the toss and elected to receive the kick. Frampton started strongly with No8 Hamish forcing his way through numerous opposition tackles well supported by Tom Cobley and all. It was however Avon who forced the first scoring opportunity after Frampton handled in a ruck, the ensuing penalty was narrowly missed by the young Avon No10. Frampton now started to turn the pressure up and forced Avon into errors which turned into outright indiscipline in the opposition ranks. This pressure was finally turned into points in the 25th min when another break on the blind side by No8 Hamish and a fine interchange of passes between Beaver, Groves and Tucker lead to the latter bursting through the final defender to score under the posts. The extra points were added by Fly half Woore. Frampton now had the psychological edge which resulted in continued ill discipline from the home side unfortunately it was Frampton who paid the price. After continual provocation Frampton’s usually cuddle second row Chadders Chadwick lashed out and was sent to the sin bin for the final ten minutes of the half. Even the half time break was full of incident, the referee called the Captains and Avon's young No10 together to remind them it was him who would control the game and that he would have no more backchat at this point the inexperienced fly half abused the referee and was immediately shown a straight red card. After the break both sides found it difficult to breakdown the others defence. Despite being down to 14 men Avon had long periods of possession but could find no way through a determined Frampton line. Midway through the second period Frampton’s numbers superiority began to show and after some slick passing in the backs young fullback Tom Murphy was set free down the left hand touch line and just yards from the line was illegally shoulder charged into touch. The visitors now tore into the opposition and after some fine rucking on the opposition's 22yard line replacement fly half Phil Salvage through a long miss pass to sprightly winger Carl Groves, Groves sprinted a good 10 yards before passing inside to supporting prop Wayne Kay who crossed the line unchallenged. Salvaged slotted the points with the final kick of the game. In the after game summary Frampton captain Jerry Tiley warned that ‘despite the hard fought victory the side must improve further if they are to continue their challenge at the top of the merit table’. 2005 - 2006 Second XV Captain: Jeremy Tiley (Mobile: 07788611073) 2004 - 2005 Second XV Captains: Nathan Cole (Tel: 07971616287) 2003 - 2004 Second XV Captain: Mike Weaver (Tel: 01454 775070) 2002 - 2003 Second XV Captain: Mike Weaver ...or should that be 'Shrek' ? (Tel: 01454 775070) 8/11/02 A good start to this season, winning all 4 games in October, and topping the merit table.... As we all are aware since the start of this season our elected second team skipper (Mike toys put of the Pram) Weaver has been called upon to fill in the void of 1st team fly half. This problem aside the second team has managed to string a few wins together despite the fact that Mike asked the great Zaff to lead his team, despite Zaff never winning the toss although given lots of training by Weaver he has managed by using his excellent rugby brain to win some difficult if not impossible games this some say comes from the pre match talk given by him which inspired many of the second team to play out of their skins, Others say they just go gaga and try to put his voice out of their mind. Many are enjoying the rugby this year and we are attracting more players to join us and some have even come out of enforced retirement (petty coat government). The issues still to be addressed are as follows. 1. Are we allowed to call Paul, Beety off the pitch? 2. Are Mike Ashwins ears bigger than Paul Beets? 3. Do you think Mark Smith has a spare Willy or is that the only one? 4. Will Mike Weaver be allowed to play in the 2nd team when he is dropped? 5. Is there no end to Zaffs Talents? 6. Will Nigel Pearce ever drive on a Thursday night? These and many more questions need to be answered. Ladies is this true...? 2001 - 2002 Second XV Captain: Pete 'Shrek' Zaffiro (Tel: 01454 776266) 13/04/2002 (Away). Frampton Cotterell 15 - 38 Nailsea and Backwell Frampton seconds travelled to Nailsea hopeful of a good result with a number of players back in the team but were unlucky to lose three players through injuries and therefore played the majority of the second half with only 14 players. The first half was very close with Frampton taking an early lead with a try from inform centre Benjamin Goulash, who touched down after some good interplay between the Frampton forwards and backs. Nailsea were quick to reply with a try after some poor defending from Frampton, but Frampton then regained the lead through an excellent try from their other centre Matt Newman who came into the line at pace and at a superb angle to take a scissors from fly half Giles Fletcher, and then went round the full back to score under the posts. Frampton then unfortunately lost their right wing Matt Hillier, with a nasty gash in his forehead after an accidental clash of heads. Nailsea then put some pressure onto Frampton and only some strong tackling from captain Peter Zaffiro denied the home side from scoring, however Nailsea did manage to break through Framptons defence eventually and took a lead at half time 14-12. With the second half delicately poised it was Frampton who took an early lead with a penalty through their experienced full back Mick Weaver, who was fresh from his sabbatical in Florida sampling American cuisine. Frampton then suffered a blow as the lost their young fly half Giles Fletcher after an innocuous collision and had to leave the field with a suspected damaged eye socket. This left Frampton with only 14 men and they had to bring Dave Mousdale from his usual position of backrow onto the wing. Nailsea were quick to capitalise on their extra man and scored a quick couple of tries through some slick handling in the backs and strong running from their experienced number 8. Frampton then suffered another blow with Mick Weaver forced to leave the field after suffering an ankle injury, this left Frampton with only 13 men but the Nailsea captain kindly offered to play for Frampton and came on for the last few minutes of the game. With the game out of Framptons reach already Nailsea scored a couple of late tries to seal their victory and make the score 38-15. Frampton will be disappointed with this result but were always struggling with 14 men against a well drilled Nailsea side. 6/04/2002 Frampton Cotterell 17 - 44 Old Bristolians Frampton produced a disappointing performance against a well-organised Old Bristolians outfit and were punished for their uncharacteristic mistakes. On a beautiful sunny afternoon at the Park in Frampton the wind had a major influence upon the outcome of the fixture, with Old B's capitalising on their first half playing with the wind. Frampton, who were captained for the first time by Nathan Cole, were their own worst enemies during the first half and missed several first up tackles to give away a number of soft tries after being forced back into their own 22 by some intelligent kicking by the experienced Old B's fly half. Frampton did however produce some good phases of play and fly half, Giles Fletcher, did his best to bring Framptons hard running centres into the game after some good ball was won by their hard working forwards. Frampton did manage to get on the score sheet in the 1st half with a well executed "catch & drive" from a lineout close to the Old B's goal line and the referee awarded a well deserved try which will go down as a forwards try after considerable debate as to whom actually was responsible for touching the ball down. However the formidable lock forward Nick Penfold and flanker Dave Cornish were involved in the middle of the action..... Was it Bill? - or was it Ben? (Looks like someone else altogether to me!) Frampton came out much stronger and committed in the 2nd half after making a few tactical substitutions and forced Old B's deep into their own half, and after some good pressure they scored a try through meaty centre Ben Gossard who stepped inside his man to touch the ball down. Frampton then failed to take advantage of the wind through some indifferent kicking and the breakdown of their lineouts, but they did however manage to score a consolation try through their other centre Matt Newman who broke through a couple of tackles to cross the line after some good build up play by the back row of Andy Dutton, Jimbo, and the veteran Steven Weaver. Another mention must go to Framptons mobile prop Jon Maidstone who contributed to the try with some good handling and a great dummy which even some of his own players bought. Frampton will be disappointed with this result after some positive performances of late but were soundly beaten by a solid Old Bristolians side. 23/03/2002 Frampton Cotterell 39 - 8 Ashley Down Old Boys The Fram 2nd XV showed another solid performance against a strong Ashley down side, Frampton were forced to ring the changes due to it being an international weekend but quickly adapted well to take an early lead through their new fly half Giles "wilko" Fletcher, who after throwing an audacious school boy dummy touched down for his first try of the season for the 2nd XV. Ashley Down then fought back well and quickly scored a try through some poor Frampton tackling. The game then stayed quite evenly poised until halftime with the only other score being 3 points from the boot of the experienced full back Phil Savage. Frampton came out strong in the 2nd half and quickly took a dominating grip on the game thanks to some aggressive forward play from the back row of Mike Lynett, Steve "Edgey" Weaver and Dave "Cornish" Pawlyn. This allowed the Frampton backs to use some good possession and sent the big centre Ben Sossage crashing over from close range on perfectly executed scissors move. Frampton began to tighten the screw and take a strangle hold on the game but still had plenty of work to do, especially with the hard running centres from Ashley Down, but Frampton defended well and after some good build up play by Nick "the Growler" Penfold the centres interlinked well and Matt "Knock on" Newman crossed the line for a well deserved try. With Framptons new partnership at halfbacks, Paul Whitehead and Giles Fletcher now combining well the game seemed within Framptons grasp, and was finally secured with 3 late tries. The first of which came from the ever present and slightly ageing Stevey Weaver who used his great strength to rumble his way over the line for a slightly ugly try; the 2nd try came from Mark Curnell who took advantage of some good handling from the Fram backs and used his pace to ease his way over in the corner. The last try of the afternoon came from substitute 2nd row/prop Nick Fulman who has only just returned to the Frampton set up and produced a determined run to cross the line carrying a couple of Ashley down players with him. The afternoons performance was finally clinched with an excellent touchline kick from Framptons new found goal kicker Dave Cornish, and all that was left to do was retire to the bar to enjoy the Six Nations action from the afternoon... 22/09/2001 Frampton Cotterell R.F.C. more? - less? Westbury-on-Trym? Highlights: Frampton's 2nd team put on a good show in front of the many spectators who joine in for the 1st 'JSI' day. A good win in a hard game, to compliment the Firsts and Thirds winning too! - A full House for Frampton...
