Frampton Cotterell RFC 2nd XV 13 Cotham Park 26

Tries: Ricky Shepherd, Mark Chaplin

FRAMPTON 2ND XV JUST SHORT OF SECURING HOME WIN

Frampton were duly disappointed from the start of this fixture when visitors Cotham Park failed to provide a front row thus preventing contested scrums and to the disgust of No8 Shepherd.

Frampton forwards began the game well taking the game to the visitors. Strong play at the set phases saw Frampton work their way up the field but just couldn’t finish off. The loss of key players in the backs soon showed as Cotham used their strength and pace to attack the Frampton back line eventually going over for the score. This was repeated in the first half on two more occasions to see the visitors take a 19 – 0 lead.

With 2nd team captain Smith back in the fold from 1st team duty, the forwards followed his example playing some good rugby to keep Frampton in contention.

Locks Rob Cobley and Tony Bleakman worked hard at the rucks whilst the back row of Philips, Plant and Shepherd continued to pressure the Cotham Park forwards eventually breaking the visitors defence and driving Shepherd over for the try. Chaplin was unsuccessful with the boot.

The second half saw the game injected with scrum half Andy Pullen taking the field. Mark Chaplin continued his recent good from at fly half as he constantly attacked the opposition.

A successful penalty kick from Chaps edged Frampton back into the game and his efforts were further rewarded when he crossed the line for a try, but was unsuccessful with his own conversion.

With the score poised at 19 – 13, the game could have gone either way.

Frampton then stepped up the work rate and as the game entered the final quarter, they edged their way towards the try line. A catch and set at the line out saw another Frampton drive which worked well all game but a bit of white line fever hit no 8 Shepherd as he crashed towards the line only too spill the ball and allow Cotham to kick themselves out of danger.

A final soft try for the visitors as the ball was kicked through the Frampton line saw them come away with the win.

A good game of rugby which Frampton could and should have won.

Man of the match awarded to prop Mark Smith

FRAMPTON 2XV SECURE RESOUNDING HOME LEAGUE WIN

A fantastic display by the whole Frampton team secured a resounding victory against Barts.

Both forwards and back linked extremely well putting together great passages of play.

Steve Handy added extreme pace in the backs as he darted through the Barts defence to score three tries.

Winger Phil Murphy used his pace down the wing to score as did Isacc Stell at full back.

Half time replacements Lock Dean Matthews and full back Aaron Plant both got themselves on the score sheet with Plant senior also getting a try to complete a father son double.

Further tries from Ian smith and fly half Nick Woore sealed a great win with the spectators appreciative of a great display of running rugby.

Man of the match was awarded to flanker Tim Phillips.

Saturday 9th October 2010
Frampton Cotterell 2nd XV - 10  Clifton 4ths - 37

Tries: Ricky Shepherd, Ian Smith

The size and experience of the Clifton 4th team proved too strong for Frampton.

Frampton drew first blood with some good running and support between forwards and backs. As Frampton pressured the Clifton line they were awarded a scrum where no8 Ricky Shepherd picked up and drove towards the line but was stopped short, but good support from lock Ian Smith allowed him to take the offload from Shepherd and go over for the first score. Nick Woore was unsuccessful with the conversion.

Clifton then came into their game and played some good rugby passing the ball well between forwards and backs. A lack of Frampton defence at the crucial moment couldn’t keep them from going over for the score.

Frampton had to work hard to contend with the size and strength of the Clifton pack and a lack of tackling allowed the visitors to pull away.

Frampton stuck at it in the second half and produced some good rugby but just couldn’t find the final move to add more points.

Strong runs from Phil Murphy and Ash Snadden tested the Clifton defence, but the forward support just couldn’t finish the move off. With 10 minutes remaining Frampton were awarded a penalty where no8 Shepherd took the ball and a strong run saw him cross the line for a second try. Woore was unsuccessful with the conversion attempt.

Clifton secured the win with two more well worked tries.

A good performance by Frampton against a strong well drilled Clifton side.

Saturday 2nd Oct 2010
Old Bristolians 3XV - 8    Frampton Cotterell 2XV - 40

Tries: Ash Snadden, Andy Parsons, Issac Stell, Nathan Jones, Ricky Shepherd, Alex Moore, Josh Creed.
Conv: Andy Pullen
Pen: Nathan Jones

On the back of a great home win against Thornbury the previous week, Frampton were determined to continue their form. Frampton began well creating some good phases of rugby. The forwards worked hard and made yards as a unit in the mauls.

Ash Snadden claimed the first points with great hands through the backs putting him in for a try in the corner. This was quickly followed by a try from Andy Parsons who was strong throughout the game making the line breaking attacks.

With the forwards dominating things up front they were able to feed good clean ball to the backs. Winger Issac Stell soon used his pace and went over for a well worked try.

This was closely followed with a try for fly half Nathan Jones after he took advantage of the home spilling the ball inside their 22.

With Frampton controlling proceedings the second half went like the first but after conceding a penalty, Frampton were caught napping and two missed tackles saw the home side cross the line for their only try.

Frampton then put on the pressure and further tries from No8 Ricky Shepherd, prop Alex Moore and flanker Josh Creed, sealed another good performance and victory.

Saturday 18th September:
Ashley Down 2nd XV - 52    Frampton Cotterell 2nd XV - 26

Tries: Steve Handy (3), Phil Murphy,
Conv: Mark Chaplin (3)

This 2nd team encounter started at a furious pace with Ashley Down looking for the quick wide ball. Frampton defended well and kept their opponents at bay. Eventually the dynamic rucking of the home side soon saw the young backs go over for their first try. Frampton handled the pressure well and put together a spell of good play with forwards linking well with the backs.

Further pressure from Ashley Down saw them go in for a second try. Fitness and communication was going to be key in this game with another break through the centre Ashley Down saw them selves 3 trys the good. Frampton were determined not to give up and after good rucking from the forwards the ball was shifted to the backs where Chaplin linked well with Handy to send him over for Framptons first try. A similar move not 5 minutes later saw Handy go over for his second.

The home side had the last say with a well worked try making the half time score 20 - 10. Fitness and tackling certainly showed in the second half with Ashley Down looking to run the ball wide and every convenience.

Frampton did not give up though and at times played some great rugby. A further try for Handy gave him is hatrick and Phil Murphy accelerated from half way to get Frampton's fourth but late tries for the home side as Frampton tired brought the final score to 52 - 26. Great performances were had by Gwillam in the forwards and Tom Bowen Hall in the backs but Man of the match was awarded to Steve Handy.

Saturday 4th September:
Frampton 2nd XV - 19       Chipping Sodbury 2nd XV - 0

Tries: Mark Chaplin (2), Simon Hughes
Conversions: Lawrence, Chaplin

Frampton produced a good performance for their first league game of the season to beat local rivals Sodbury at their ground. The game started well for Frampton with the forwards displaying the good work that has been focused on in training. A succession of forward moves up the park eventually allowed the ball to be span out to the backs giving them room to run and sending Simon Hughes over for the first try which was converted by Lawrence. Sodbury then woke up and applied their own pressure but the Frampton defence was strong with the defensive work done in pre season training paying off.

A few changes were made in the second half with Pullen coming on for Parsons at scrum half, Ian Smith for Chadders in the second row, Groves for Lawrence at fly half and Plant for Cobley in the back row. Frampton continued to have the better of the half and the work rate paid off with Chaplin crossing the line for two late tries and adding a conversion, making the final score 19 – 0.

Special mention to Mark Chaplin who was strong in both attack and defence and co-ordinated the back line very well but Man of the match was awarded to flanker Josh Creed for his continued work rate throughout the game.
