FRAMPTON HAPPY WITH A POINT AGAINST LEAGUE FLYERS RICHIANS
Frampton Cotterell played host to 3rd in the Glos prem table, Old Richians at the weekend and were satisfied to come away with a point.
Both sides started the game nervously with a few errors early on. Frampton then used their strength in the forwards to pressure their opponents and good set phases saw them in their opponents 22. They were soon rewarded for their efforts as the visitors went off side allowing fly half Matt Lawrence to step up and slot home a penalty kick giving Frampton the first score.
Old Richians then awoke and came back at Frampton scoring a converted try.
As the game flowed up and down the pitch both sides played some good rugby with Frampton looking particularly strong at the set phases.
On 23 mins flanker Matt Leek was on hand to support the backs taking the ball well and crashing over for a try. Lawrence added the two points to give Frampton the lead.
Old Richians responded and hit back with another try of their own which was successfully converted to give them a narrow lead. Half time score 10 - 14 Frampton came out for the second half determined to keep in the game but 3 minutes in they were caught offside at a ruck allowing the visitors to creep ahead with a further 3 points.
This was duly cancelled out minutes later as again Frampton worked hard to get back up the pitch and were awarded a penalty which Lawrence neatly hit the target.
Frampton continued to up the work rate and the strength of the forwards especially locks Stewart and Adams saw Frampton drive hard towards the line. The phases kept coming with ruck after ruck but once within inches of the line an error allowed Richians to turn over the ball allowing them to quickly counterattack and take the ball right down the other end of the field, but Frampton’s defence held strong. Again, Frampton worked hard to pressure their opponents and after another fantastic driving maul Frampton were back in their opponents 22. With great strength the forwards were over the line but the try was deemed to be held up. With the scrum set Frampton drove over the line allowing no 8 Leek to power over for his and Frampton’s second try. Lawrence again successful with the conversion.
With Frampton now leading the latter part of the match became a little scrappy as both sides were determined to get the win. With only 5 minutes remaining Frampton conceded a penalty which was converted allowing the visitors to take the score to 20 points each.
Frampton made a few errors which may have affected the final result but were none the less very happy to come away with the draw. Another good game for youngster Isaac Stell and locks John Stewart and Sam Adams but man of the match went to try scorer Matt Leek after a stellar performance.

FRAMPTONS PACE SEES OFF OLD C’S
Frampton made the short trip to opponents Old Colstonians at the weekend with two players making their first team Debut. Hooker Edmundson stepped up for the injured Joe Bennett whilst Isaac Stell came in at full back.
Frampton took charge from the KO and within the first 2 minutes they were pushing for a try but a turn over saw the home side come away with the ball quickly moving back down the field.
Player/coach Liam Smye took the field after only 11 minutes after centre Nathan Flye suffered a knee injury.
Frampton battled hard and after a good period of strong play the ball was quickly moved out to the backs but a lapse of concentration saw Old C’s intercept the ball allowing them to put the first points on the board with a converted try. The hosts increased their lead moments later after being awarded a penalty.
Although 10 - nil down, Frampton kept their heads up and answered with a try of their own, set up by blind side flanker Matt Leek, and finished off by open side Mark Davies. Matt Lawrence stepped up to secure the 7 points.
Half time: Old C's 10 Frampton 7
Frampton started the second half strongly and after the ball was crisply fed to winger Alex Giles, he promptly charged for the line side stepping 3 of the opposition on the way. A great try, successfully converted by Lawrence.
Great rugby was played by both sides throughout the second half but Frampton had the edge and as the game moved into the last quarter it was Frampton who looked the sharper with Mark Davies scoring again. Lawrence was just off target with the conversion attempt.
Gwillam Thomas then left the field making way for Jimmy ‘ribs’ Holt.
Training really began to pay dividends in the latter stages of the game as the set phases worked well eventually allowing Davies to go over for his hat trick, again set up by Matt Leek. Lawrence found his form to secure the conversion.
Unfortunately a falling out saw a player from each side in the bin for the remainder of the game but with Frampton undeterred the backs proved their pace and skill was too much for the home side as they ran in a further 2 tries, one from fly half Matt Lawrence and the other from debutant Isaac Stell. Unfortunately Lawrence just pushed the conversions wide of the posts.
This was a great performance by Frampton with the strength of the forwards especially lock Sam Adams and No8 Gwillam Thomas and the speed and width of the backs securing a great away win.
Man of the match Isaac Stell.
Next week, a home fixture against Old Richians.
Saturday 30th October 2010 Frampton Cotterell RFC 13 Widden Old Boys 18Tries: Alex Giles Conv: Matt Lawrence Penalties: Matt Lawrence (2)
FRAMPTON COME CLOSE IN HARD FOUGHT GAME
Frampton looked totally prepared for this home fixture against what looked like a young and big Widden side.
From the off Fram were determined to stamp their authority on the game and quickly got into their stride. With Paul ‘Rocco’ Whitehead bossing things at the base of the forwards the Fram pack quickly made ground playing some fantastic rugby.
With just 2 minutes in, fly half Matt Lawrence stepped up for his first attempt at a penalty, but unfortunately pulled it just wide.
The home side continued their good form and with great mauling from the Fram pack they unleashed the backs where Mike Ashwin and Nathan Flye combined well to pressure the Widden back line.
With Frampton retaining the ball well the visitors got frustrated and were soon caught off side allowing Lawrence to step up and claim the first points of the game.
This was closely followed with a second penalty increasing Frampton’s lead.
With their tails up Frampton continued to pressure Widden and even when they found themselves 10 yards from their own line, great defence especially from hooker Joe Bennett, kept the visitors out allowing Lawrence to find touch and out of trouble.
With one Widden penalty already missed a second penalty attempt some 40 yards out looked to be optimistic but their goal kicker hit the ball sweetly to make it 6 – 3.
On 26 minutes Widden slotted home another penalty to level the scores.
Frampton then upped their game further and after superb mauling from the Frampton pack led by Joe Bennett, the ball was quickly shifted to the wing where the pace and strength of winger Alex Giles was too strong for his opposite number allowing him to cross the line for the try which was successfully converted by Lawrence.
Half time score: Frampton 13 Widden 6
Frampton started the second half well but soon made a few decisive errors. After 8 mins Widden were awarded a penalty which pulled to the left of the upright to the delight of the crowd.
With Frampton continuing to work hard in defence, they soon found themselves on the back foot of a Widden maul and even the strength and determination of prop Alex Moore just couldn’t keep them out for the converted try.
With a few wrong decisions and handling errors, Fram made hard work of the second half.
The visitors then had a good spell of their own as they upped their game and another strong maul saw them cross the line with the conversion unsuccessful giving them the lead.
The fresh legs of Jimmy Holt and Ash Stanton helped to keep up the home side’s momentum and another great maul from Frampton again with Bennett and Moore at the fore, saw the Fram pack cross the line but it was deemed to be held up.
Frampton again thought they were in to eve the score when winger Si Belston linked well with centre Mike Ashwin, but the last pass was deemed to have been forward.
A great game of rugby with a great display from the Frampton forwards.
Full time Score: Frampton 13 Widden Old Boys 18
Prop Alex Moore played extremely well returning to the first team at tighthead prop.
An overall great display by the Fram forwards in the first half both in the maul and the ruck with hooker Joe Bennett leading by example.
Saturday 23rd October 2010 Gloucester Old Boys 30 Frampton Cotterell 42 Tries: John Stewart, Ross Osborne, Paul Whitehead, Matt Leek (3), Paul Beet, Conversions: Matt Lawrence (2) Penalties: Matt Lawrence FRAMPTON SECURE RESOUNDING WIN AWAY FROM HOME A fantastic display by the Frampton forwards secured a much deserved win away from home. Great driving by the forwards led by Matt Leek secured the first try for Frampton grounded by lock John Stewart. Unfortunately the conversion attempt was just wide of the upright. Glos OB replied a couple of minutes later with a converted try. The home side further responded with a penalty soon after due to an offside decision at the ruck. Frampton continued to pressurise their opponent’s line and a second try beckoned but a knock on at the try line denied the visitors. A scrum was awarded to the home side but strong scrummaging from Frampton won them the ball and they went over the line for Ross Osborne to score the try. Unfortunately the conversion again just missed the target. Frampton kept up the momentum and after a ruck saw the ball pop out at the side, scrumhalf Paul ‘Rocco’ Whitehead pounced and charged down the wing from the half way line to score under the posts which was duly converted by fly half Matt Lawrence. Ten minutes before the half time whistle play was held up after a Glos OB player had to leave the field by ambulance with a neck injury. Play resumed and Frampton capitalised on the Glos OB hooker in the sin bin with No 8 Matt Leek going over for his first try of the game which was unconverted. Flanker Josh Creed then made his debut for the 1st team after Lock Sam Adams had to leave the field with a neck injury. Glos OB's fly half then kicked a well positioned penalty after Frampton were deemed to be offside at the ruck taking the half time score to 13 – 22. The second half produced the same quality rugby as the first with play flowing both ways. It was Glos OB who struck first after just 3 minutes as they scored a second converted try. Frampton continued to work hard with strong rucking from the forward and quick ball delivered to the backs by Whitehead. A slight lack in concentration saw Glos OB break the Frampton defence for another converted try making the score 27 – 22. Fly half Lawrence then closed the gap with a well taken penalty only for it to be opened again with a penalty for the home side. With the score at 30 – 25 things could have gone either way but the introduction of player/coach Paul Beet who replaced the injured Osborne, calmed Frampton and they upped their game scoring 3 tries in 7 minutes. Beet led by example scoring the first try followed quickly by 2 from No 8 Matt Leek completing his hat trick. Lawrence found his form and converted the last try. This was a great display by the Frampton forwards especially Matt Leek but man of the match was awarded to scrum half Paul Whitehead. An unfortunate break in play didn't stop the momentum of a game worth watching. Some great rugby was played by both teams.
Saturday 9th October 2010 Brockworth 1st XV - 20 Frampton Cotterell 1st XV - 23Tries: Matt Jones, Mattie Lawrence
Conv: 2 Mattie Lawrence Pen: 2 Mattie Lawrence Drop-Goal: 1 Mattie Lawrence Frampton were determined to secure a win after their home loss to Southmead. The first ten minutes saw Frampton pressuring their opponents but a lack of discipline saw them concede 5 penalties which enabled Brockworth to put 6 points on the board. Frampton then settled into the game and played some good rugby with forwards and backs linking well. Mattie Lawrence failed to hit the target with his attempt at a penalty after 20 minutes. With the forwards starting to dominate proceedings flanker Mark Davies picked up a loose ball and made a spectacular run, which he off-loaded to full back Nathan Jones who in turn passed to flanker Matt Jones who went over for Frampton’s first try. Mattie Lawrence added the two points. Brockworth then slotted home a penalty to take the lead. This was short lived as Frampton scored a second try this time courtesy of fly half Mattie Lawrence who made a darting run through the centre leaving the opponents defence for dead. Lawrence added the conversion to bring the score to 14 – 9 to Frampton. Five minutes before the end of the first half Brockworth found a gap in the Frampton defence and went over to score an unconverted try. This was soon followed by a penalty followed by a quick penalty giving Brockworth the lead. Lawrence then levelled the scores at the end of the first session with a well struck penalty. Half Time score 17 – 17 The second half was evenly matched. Frampton again played some good rugby but just could not finish. Brockworth scored another penalty mid way through the second half briefly giving them the lead. This was soon cancelled out with a penalty by Lawrence. All credit to the Frampton defence as a Brockworth try was held up. A couple more penalties were missed by both teams and a sin bin for Frampton Lock Adams for a tackle deemed to be a little too kept the sides even but as the final whistle drew near to signal the end of play Lawrence banged home a brilliantly positioned drop goal to give them the lead. As the final whistle went Frampton new they had made hard work of the game but it was a win never the less. Man of the match was awarded to fly half Mattie Lawrence. Next week a break for the league with a cup game against Old Bristolians. Saturday 2nd Oct 2010 Frampton Cotterell 1XV - 13 Southmead 1XV - 15 Frampton were determined to secure a home win after their win away the previous week. The game was very aggressive game from the outset and several penalties being conceded by both teams in the first 15 mins. Frampton were first to put points on the board with a penalty by Matt Lawrence. Good attacking play and defensive skills from both sides saw the halftime score remain at 3 – 0. After sustaining a particularly hard tackle in the first half Frampton fullback Stanton left the field with making way for Gwillam Thomas. The second half continued much like the first with a lot of frustration coming out. Thomas soon left the field after receiving an ankle injury and was replaced by Paul Beet. Frampton continued to apply the pressure working hard in the forwards and were soon awarded another penalty for their efforts. Lawrence found his feet again and slotted over a second penalty With the game evenly poised, frustration soon boiled over and Frampton prop Smith found himself in the sin bin. Southmead took the advantage and scored a converted try soon followed by a penalty. Into the last quarter and Frampton continued to attack looking to seal the win and after several phases of good quick ball Frampton found themselves yards from the opponent’s line. With Southmead defending well Frampton just couldn’t find the gap but after the away side continually came offside, Frampton were awarded a penalty try which Matt Lawrence converted. Lack of discipline lead to a Southmead player seeing red and unfortunately for Frampton lock John Stewart, who had battled hard in the second row all game had to be replaced. After a brief stoppage the game resumed and from a lineout close to the Frampton line, Southmead went over for an unconverted try just at the final whistle.
Saturday 25th September 2010 Bristol Saracens 1st XV - 5 Frampton Cotterell 1st XV - 21With Frampton looking for their first league win of the season the visitors had their tails up from the off. It didn’t take them long to get into their stride and take charge of the game as Frampton scored their first try within 4 minutes courtesy of fly half and skipper Matt Lawrence which he duly converted. Moments later Saracens had a flanker binned for tripping and Frampton tried to capitalise on the advantage but Lawrence's boot not so lucky with an attempt at a penalty.
At the start of the second quarter the visitors were forced to make a front row replacement but this didn’t seem to upset proceedings as winger Simon Belsten made a strong run down the line, going over for what seemed a try but it was deemed to be held up. Another injury in the front row then unsettled things leading to uncontested scrums.
Just before the half time whistle an extensive attack by the Frampton forwards and passing the ball out wide along the backs saw Mark Davies take a switch and power over the line for Frampton’s second try which was converted by Lawrence.
Half time Saracens - 0 Frampton - 14
2 mins after the restart Lawrence was unlucky with a penalty attempt.
A lot of stoppages during the second half made the game very disjointed and Saracens slipped through the Frampton defence to score an unconverted try. Into the last quarter and Frampton were keen to put the game out of reach. Quick ball handling and pace from the backs secured another try for Matt Lawrence which he converted.
Frampton saw themselves pinned back in the last quarter as Saracens upped their game but the visitors defence held strong denying Saracens of any further score. At the final whistle Frampton Cotterell had a well deserved win.
Matt Lawrence was Man of the Match
Saturday 18th September: Frampton Cotterell 1st XV - 14 Old Bristolians 1st XV - 22Tries: Matt Leak, Mark Davies, Conv: Matt Lawrence (2)
Frampton played host to Old Bristolians at the weekend in their first home game of the season. Frampton started strongly dominating proceedings in the forwards. A series of scrums showed Frampton having the upper hand allowing good clean ball out to the backs. This was consistent as Frampton applied the pressure. Old B’s defended well and as Frampton put together 3 or 4 phases of rugby the visitors scrappy defence upset the decisive last move keeping Frampton off of the score sheet. This wasn’t helped with the referee not allowing play to flow freely. Old B’s got themselves out of difficulty by kicking back into Framptons half and chasing strongly to apply pressure and forcing the home side to have to work themselves back up the pitch. Frampton scored two very good tries after strong forwards play courtesy of Matt Leak and Mark Davies. A lack of concentration and tackling let Old B’s in for two easy tries and the boot from the penalty spot was the difference. All in all, Frampton were unlucky not to secure the win.
Saturday 4th September: Frampton 1st XV - 62 Chipping Sodbury 1st XV - 3Tries: Dom Pullen (3), Belsten (2), Fly, Plant, Lawrence, Kane and Ashwin Conversions: Lawrence (6) Frampton produced a fantastic performance to outplay local rivals Sodbury throughout. Pre-season training and fitness levels showed throughout the game as Frampton dominated in all areas. The forwards were strong in attack and linked well with the backs and after a succession of close forward plays Frampton would spin the ball wide releasing the backs into space and across the line with Sodbury not being able to defend the width. The defensive work in training also prevailed with Frampton keeping the opposition from crossing their line for a 10 minute period in the first half. Good communication and strength gave them a strong all round team performance. Good individual performances were had by Rob Gallagher and Matt Lawrence but Man of the match was flanker Mark Kane. Another mention goes to Aaron Plant making his debut for the first team and scoring his first try.
Frampton to travel to Whitehall next weekend for their first league game of the season.
