Club History Frampton Cotterell RFC was founded in 1973 by a group of players from the former Aces RFC (the BAC and Rolls Royce Apprentice Association) and locals from the area who were keen to have a club in the village.
Bringing the fixtures and players for 3 teams and the 'white nylon shirts', the Club was accepted into the RFU, the Gloucestershire RFU and the Bristol Combination.
Early facilities were provided at The Ridings High School pitches and the Royal British Legion for 'hospitality'. During that early period, development of a pitch (then and still affectionately known as Dog S**t Alley), at The Park required the removal of a hedgerow across the field and the conversion of the former primary school playground toilet block into changing rooms and showers.
One of the early actions was to create a foundation for the Club's future by forming a junior section and by brining on-board the famous Bill Pitt, we were assured of a structure which became the envy of many established clubs.
Details of the Club's performances, officers, captains and activities have been accurately and entertainingly recorded over the years by BAS (Barry Smith), a founder member and influential Club stalwart. Each year is recorded in a separate document and can be viewed in the Committee Room at Crossbow House, they make fascinating reading.
In the early days, many of the members were from outside of the village but we consciously embraced our village existence and entered into many community events, carnivals, charity events etc. Over the years the membership has changed to reflect our home grown policy and far more originate from either Frampton Cotterell or one of the surrounding villages.
There were no such things as leagues in the early days and all matches with the exception of the Bristol Combination Cup competition, were classified as 'friendlies' and with the strength of combination rugby, it was not necessary to travel far from the city to fill our fixture list.
However, twice a year we did travel afar as it was a tradition to enjoy an Easter Tour and an annual Club visit to Twickenham to watch our national team. Both events were always well supported and there are many stories to be told about these expeditions, some of these may follow later!
